Japan’s Sony has scored a surprise win in the first round of the videogame merger wars. But Japan’s Sony has scored a surprise win in the first round of the videogame merger wars—thanks to the U.K. government. Antitrust regulators in the U.K. blocked Microsoft’s $75 billion deal to buy game maker Activision Blizzard on Wednesday, putting the fate of the transaction in serious doubt. The Competition and Markets Authority said the combination could hinder competition in the nascent cloud gaming segment. Both companies will appeal the ruling, but completing the deal now seems like a long shot.

Photo: Caroline Brehman/ShutterstockWASHINGTON—A federal appeals court paved the way late Wednesday for former Vice President Mike Pence to appear before the grand jury investigating former President Donald Trump’s efforts to remain in power after the 2020 election. In a sealed decision, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected Mr. Trump’s emergency bid to prevent Mr. Pence from testifying in the criminal inquiry, dealing the latest setback to the former president as he confronts a swirl of legal scrutiny.
Sen. Mitt Romney said making room for bike lanes is "the height of stupidity" and opposes e-bike credits. "Removing automobile lanes to put in bike lanes is, in my opinion, the height of stupidity, it means more cars backing up, creating more emissions." "There is a widespread suspicion on the right today that liberals want to take away their way of life," Carney told Insider. That is in the background of the mind of every conservative, and so when they hear more bike lanes, they think, 'Okay, what is that code for?'" Carney told attendees at the annual National Bike Summit in Washington last week to frame their efforts as building safer and more interconnected communities.
My research found that Pelosi eats ice cream for breakfast, hot dogs for lunch, pasta, and chocolate. Chocolate ice cream for breakfast, rich and creamy pasta, and lots of snacking chocolate. She claims she does not exercise; her daughter once arrived home to find her mother eating chocolate ice cream while using a stationary bike. I save the ice cream for later to avoid a massive sugar crash and start out with a cup of black tea instead. However, I don't want to slack off after the ice cream episode, so I slather it on.

California Looks to Ban Diesel Trucks at Ports by 2035

An ambitious California plan to require trucking fleets in the state to switch from diesel to electric power faces a potential backup at charging stations. Requiring that dealers and truckers make the switch should give companies confidence to invest in charging stations, Mr. Brasil said. The trucks tend to cost two or three times as much as diesel trucks, which retail for about $150,000. State officials say they have funded 200 charging stations for medium- and heavy-duty trucks so far and that many more are being funded by private companies. Write to Paul Berger at paul.berger@wsj.comCorrections & AmplificationsThe Port of Los Angeles expects to install a small number of charging stations for electric trucks.

Maryland and Missouri join 19 other states and the District of Columbia in legalizing recreational marijuana, while legalization proposals failed to pass in Arkansas, North Dakota and South Dakota. MarylandFollowing the passage of Maryland's Question 4, adults in the state will be allowed to possess up to 1.5 ounces, or two marijuana plants, beginning July 1, 2023. WALPAC donated almost 50-50 to Democratic and Republican federal candidates for the midterms. Walmart's PAC donated to 41 candidates who denied the 2020 presidential election results, ProPublica found. Of that, about 53% went to Republican candidates, and 47% went to Democrats. Some members of Congress, particularly among Democrats, also reject any corporate PAC contribution — WALPAC or otherwise — as a matter of practice. However, the company did donate a significant amount of money to candidates who voted against certifying the 2020 presidential election results.
Zeldin hopes to end a two-decade drought for Republicans seeking statewide office in New York. “New Yorkers are ready,” Zeldin said. Her support in a primary for an upstate congressional district of right-wing political activist Carl Paladino who lost to the state Republican chair drew the ire of some in the state party. While there are about 3 million unaffiliated voters in New York, a successful Republican candidate has to make inroads with registered Democrats. “When I got elected they were saying the same things about me that they’re saying about Zeldin,” Pataki said.
It's unlikely Republicans would join Democrats to vote to convict Trump who's mulled a 2024 run. But the Constitution allows the Senate to bar an official that lawmakers have convicted in an impeachment trial from holding federal office again. It's also not certain if enough Republicans will vote to convict Trump and trigger the vote to ban him from holding public office again. It's not impossible, but the odds of 67 senators voting to convict Trump are long. Jolly at the time said the House need not worry about what the Senate would do with the impeachment vote.
